Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr.

President George W. Bush nominated John G. Roberts, Jr., initially, to fill retiring Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s seat on the United States Supreme Court. However, after Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist passed away on September 3, 2005, on this date in 2005, President Bush nominated John Roberts as the next chief justice of the United States Supreme Court.  On September 29, the Senate confirmed his nomination and he became the 17th chief justice.  For a quick overview of the justice’s ideological leanings go to
